More things you need to know about the National No Bra Day - Spread The Awareness

Tuesday 18 October 2016

Know it that the National No Bra Day is observed annually on October 13. This is a day to leave your bra at home.
National No Bra Day is meant to promote breast cancer awareness and to help raise money for research. Many women who have survived breast cancer are unable to go without a bra as they need it to hold their prosthesis after surgery. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and National No Bra Day should serve as a reminder for all women to be screened for breast cancer.

Although a controversial event in the eyes of some, National No Bra Day further aims to raise awareness of breast cancer during October. Using the hashtag #nobraday on social media and encouraging women to go braless for a 24-hour period on the 13th October, National No Bra Day aims to raise awareness of the importance of knowing how to carry out breast self-examinations, being able to recognise the symptoms of breast cancer and encouraging women to partake in regular breast cancer screening.

The whole of October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, with October 14th also being the “Big Pink” – an event encouraging people to organise events and wear pink to raise money and awareness for breast cancer care.

History of No Bra Day

No Bra Day was established to both raise awareness of breast cancer and its prevalence in today’s society, as well as to drive opportunities for fund-raising to help keep the research moving. 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lives and have to battle a disease that can, at worst, be lethal. But outside of just its lethality, it also has the possibility of impacting a woman’s view of herself, her ability to breastfeed, and can result in surgeries that include mastectomies. Breasts are of the primary identifiers of what makes a woman, visually, a woman, and having to have them removed in the fight against breast cancer can lead to self-image issues and depression.

So why is it that women everywhere choose not to wear a bra to raise awareness of this horrible disease? Women who have been through a battle with breast cancer often have to wear a prosthesis to hide the fact that they’ve had a breast or breasts removed, and are unable to go without a bra as a result. By spending the day without a bra you can raise awareness and help to prevent other women from having to go through this experience.

So on October 13th, remember to leave the lingerie at home, or take part on social media to help raise awareness for breast cancer research,
