The Police on Tuesday arraigned a 70-year-old herbalist, Alidu Afolabi, in an Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan, Oyo State, for allegedly defrauding two brothers of N18m.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Afolabi, a herbalist from Aba Paanu, Ilebu area of Ibadan, was arraigned on a two-count charge of obtaining money under false pretences and stealing.
The prosecutor, Inspector Sunday Ogunremi, told the court that Afolabi fraudulently obtained the sum from two brothers, Rasheed Alimi and Dauda Alimi.
“Afolabi collected the money from the two brothers who allegedly wanted Afolabi to perform money-making rituals for them and under false pretence to double the money for them,” Ogunremi said.
He alleged that the accused committed the offence sometime in April at about 10.00a.m. at Ado’s Compound, Oke-Ado, Ibadan, where he was a tenant.
Ogunremi said the offence contravened sections 390 (9) and 419 of the Criminal Code Cap 38, Vol. II, Laws of Oyo State 2000.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs. Abiona Richard, granted the accused bail in the sum of N9m with two sureties in like sum.
Mrs. Richard said one of the sureties must be a blood relation and civil servant on Grade Level 09, while the second must have landed property with Certificate of Occupancy.
She adjourned the case till November 21. (NAN)
